"We come to know God and go to love people." That is the purpose of First United Methodist Church. Our programs and ministries are diverse in order to respond to the varied needs of our community and those who are a part of our worshiping and serving fellowship. As we worship each week, we seek to connect the spiritual wisdom contained in scripture with the issues that effect our world and personal lives. Our congregation serves the community of Independence through the use of our facilities and outreach ministries. First United Methodist Church is a connectional church, one of 330 United Methodist congregations within the Kansas East Conference who serve Jesus Christ together with over eight million persons throughout the United States and the world.

God has blessed our congregation with many wonderful resources: our people, our facilities, our gifts. Through the hard work and generosity of many persons, the congregation has expanded and remodeled its facilities.

The congregation seeks to live out three goals reflected in our Mission Design Plan:
