                        Ogden Friendship House

Each day a new beginning...
Judy Atwood described the work of Ogden Friendship House in her January 2006 memo. In 2005, Ogden Friendship House made 1,311 distributions of food and 2,137 distributions of clothing to families and individuals; spent $4,308 in helping with utilities, rent, and medications; averaged 15 children in the K-5 after school program and another 5 students in a tutoring program; and offered Sunday School for children and adults, Disciple Bible Study, and Sunday worship for the Ogden community.

Our church, First United Methodist Church of Independence, has covenanted to support Judy and her work in Ogden.

August 21, during the Mission Fair and worship services, $620 was raised for Ogden Friendship House. This brings total contributions, thus far, to $923.40, which is well on our way toward First United Methodist Church's pledge of $1,000.

Ogden Friendship House is a mission church supported by the conference offering opportunities for worship, study and personal growth in an at-risk community.

As a part of the Kansas East Conference and the Friendship Cooperative Parish, Ogden Friendship House has become a visible and vital presence in Ogden, Kansas, located eight miles west of Manhattan. Ogden Friendship House receives financial support and contributions from congregations throughout the Kansas East Conference.

Ogden is a small town with a myriad of large needs, for it is home to many poverty level families, a great percentage of whom are single women with young children. Over 85% live in rental housing, mostly mobile homes. Welfare rolls are large and opportunities to change the status are limited. There are few jobs in town and no public transportation; unemployment is high. Opportunities for recreation and leisure are limited. Ogden is a town that calls us to be a church together.

Ogden Friendship House provides opportunities for worship on Sunday mornings; provides pastoral counseling as needed; operates a food and clothing distribution center serving 30-40 families each week; provides space for nutrition classes; provides an After School Program for elementary age children; provides a Tutoring Program for older youth; provides adult and children's Sunday School classes; works in cooperation with other agencies seeking to meet the needs of the Ogden Community and provides space for commodity delivery, Community Playgroup, WIC, Mother and Infant Program, etc.

To join the circle of supporting friends of Ogden Friendship House become a member of Friendship Club. It's affordable. It's joyful. It's essential.
