"125 Years of Growing In Christ" 1872-1997
On February 16, 1872, the charter was granted to the First Methodist Episcopal Church of Independence. On February 16, 1997, the first event of the year-long 125th Anniversary celebration took place during church with the first "Moment in History"; special music; and members of the congregation reminiscing about the past. A birthday party was held following the service. A large birthday sign was placed near the church entrance and our slogan was introduced: "125 Years of Growing in Christ." This was portrayed through the lovely banner.
The "Moments in History" have continue each third-Sunday throughout the year and we have learned much about the history of our church. "The Church in the Wildwood" became our monthly theme song.
The Mid-High Youth Group also became involved as they marketed T-shirts, hats and bags with the anniversary message on them.
On Wednesday, June 4, 1884 the ladies of M. E. Society held an ice cream, strawberries and cake social; and on Wednesday June 4, 1997, the United Medodist Women again held such an event. The UMW then celebrated it's 25th year with a special meeing on June 18, with a theme "Celebrating 125 years at Penn and Maple." And on June 29, the Worship Committee held the worship service at Riverside Park's Bandshell with an old-fashioned basket dinner following.
September 13-14 has been set aside as a "Celebration Weekend." At the Saturday evening "Harvest of Blessings" banquet, Senator Nancy (Landon) Kassebaum Baker will be the keynote speaker and on Sunday Bishop Richard B.Wilke will be the guest preacher. Other Sunday events will include a tour of the church to see how various areas have been used over the years; a display of baby pictures from families with two or more generations of membership on the church's cradle roll; photos of brides and grooms, married in the church or parsonage, will be displayed in the Brides' Room. A "Disciple Bible Study" luncheon follows worship with Bishop Richard and Julia Wilke, authors of the series, as special guests.
We thank God for His presence with us throughtout this 125 years and our faith remains strong that God is with us as we move into the next 125 years.
